The fundamental question of how a living organism such as a human being,which is composed of an astronomical number of cells, is able to coordinate optimal function and above all the entire life cycle (cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, etc.) of each individual cell in such way that the integrity of the overall system is retained, is as old as science itself.
